I'm trying to train myself to improvise music on the organ, a difficult skill, but often necessary. I do not know if there are any church organists reading anything on LiC, but if there is, they might be interested in some advice I got from the PianoWorld forums, given by an organist called Vectistim:

I think organists should support each other -- it can be a lonely occupation.

Sorry to hear being an organist can be lonely because organists give so much pleasure to those who listen to their music.

Although I play organ at an Anglican Church, I sometimes fill in at a Unitarian Church when their organist is ill.

Last week the minister and I shared terrorist-jokes about organists:

1.

Vicar: What's the difference between an organist and a terrorist?

You can negotiate with a terrorist.

2.

Organist: What's the difference between a vicar and a terrorist?

The terrorist knows what he's doing.

(And I wonder why it's so lonely to be an organist (!))

David I am new here, and I am a self taught pianist and not an organist.  But I think I might be able to give a tiny amount of insight into why being an organist (or pianist) is lonely and that is because we "hear" things differently from others who are not so musically inclined.  Like an artist painting a picture "sees" things differently from those who are not so artisically inclined.  Does this make any sense?

The Poor Orphan Child

I was reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, this poem is just before Jane goes to Lowood House, the orphanage in the story. It reminded me of Psalm 27 verse 10: When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up. My feet they…

Food for thought...

Autistic daughter (Biology graduate) to Mum:  "Mum, will there be sea creatures in Heaven?"Knowledgeable (well, thinks she is) Mum: Well, it does say in the Bible (Rev 21:1 - courtesy Google) that there will be no more sea...Daughter: "Oh, that won't be a problem, they'll just swim through the air."I thought it appropriate not to argue!See More
